The III. Institute of Physics B has been working since 1967 in the field of experimental particle and astroparticle physics. Guideline for our Institute was and is the exploration of elementary particles and their interactions at the highest energies. For many years, we design international experiments at the world's largest particle accelerator and observatories for cosmic particles.
We study the fundamental constituents of matter at large accelerator facilities worldwide. These include the CMS experiment at CERN in Switzerland and the T2K experiment in Japan. At the COSY accelerator in Jülich studies are underway to measure the electric dipole moment of the proton.Neutrinos we also examine in experiments that are carried out close to nuclear reactors. The Double Chooz experiment is in operation at the Belgian-French border and in China the JUNO experiment is in the development phase. At the South Pole we participate in the operation and the data analysis of the IceCube experiment to detect the highest energy neutrinos with the aim to identify the source of this radiation. Other areas of research that have emerged in recent years are the use of tools of particle physics in the field of medical radiation therapy and feasibility studies for a space mission, that will demonstrate life on Saturn's moon Enceladus. Many of these works are only possible through the use of GRID Compting structures. We operate a Tier 2 GRID station as part of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG).
Excellent contributions are possible by large institute workshops, a powerful computer infrastructure and the strong support by research funds of the BMBF, the DGF and the HGF Alliance, which are carefully managed and deployed.
