Silicon detectors for HL-LHC

Current works:

For operation at the HL-LHC, the inner silicon detector will be renewed. The work for the planned installation in the year 2025 is already in full swing. We are working on so-called 2S detector modules whose sensitive area is two silicon strip sensors.

Possible theses

Historical:

Our research group focused on the development of novel particle detectors based on fast scintillator materials, which are read out by silicon photomultipliers. Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) replaced in many areas conventional photomultiplier tubes. Also in the CMS experiment, e.g. Hadron Outer Calorimeter.
We want to incorporate the signals of these subdetector, upgraded in Long Shutdown 1, into the trigger decision. With a Muon Track fast Tag, MTT, it is possible to use the track information of high-energy muons early in the trigger decision.

Work in the MTT project for HL-LHC are in the area of prototype development. Several prototype detectors for the MTT project have so far been successfully put into operation and tested in test beam experiments. Out of this work, spin-off projects have emerged, e.g. radiography of fast neutrons.

As part of the CMS silicon tracker our detector group were employed with three main themes

  • Operation and optimization of the performance of the silicon strip tracker
  • Investigation of possible error scenarios and their impact on data quality
  • Improvement of the particle flow jet algorithm

Before using the CMS tracker, we have contributed significantly to the construction and commissioning:

  • Module qualification with the ARC system
  • Integration of modules on Detektorsubstrukturen (Petal-integration)
  • Operation of the silicon tracker
